How To Apply Rail Tape for SUP Boards

Members of the paddleboarding community differ on the value of rail tape for SUP boards, but here at Ride The Tide we think it is well worth the investment. Five Easy Steps

In your kit you will find two rounded rail tapes, measuring 1.8m by 90mm, and some alcohol wipes.

1. First, use the wipes to clean the rails and ensure there is no grit or fingerprints on the sides of the board.

2. Apply the tape starting from the top of your board. Your starting point should be approximately thirty centimetres down from the tip, depending on the size of your board.

3. Press down hard as you start applying the tape, and make sure there are no air bubbles underneath - if there are, you can simply lift the tape up and start again.

4. When applying the tape, make sure you keep the tape line as close to the centre as possible, or even move it slightly toward the top side of the board, as you are attempting to avoid scuff marks and paddle damage.

5. If you wish to remove your rail tape at a later date, use a hairdryer to apply a bit of heat to the tape first - this makes it easier to lift off.

Do I Really Need Rail Tape?

It depends. Experienced boarders with excellent paddle technique can get by without rail tape if they are careful. We think beginners should protect their new boards while they hone their paddle technique, and anyone who runs a SUP hire school should definitely protect every one of their assets from damage caused by beginners with rail tape.
