SUP In Winter - Tips To Stay Warm

Keeping active in Winter is always a little harder than in the warmer months. But when you add water to the mix it can be even more trying to stay motivated!

Many Australians still enjoy mild to warm winters, however a good portion of Southerners will experience their fair share of chilly days. And while Summer is always the perfect time to SUP for warmth and enjoying the water, never discount Winter for taking to the water with your SUP. As long as the water isn't frozen, you can still get out and enjoy the perfect SUP conditions that Winter brings and stay fit throughout the cooler months.

Here are our top tips to get out on your SUP and stay warm this Winter.

PREPARE BEFORE YOU PADDLE

- Take a thermos of tea, coffee or hot chocolate. Enough for before you SUP to warm up and then after the paddle. It will be something nice to look forward to after your SUP.

- Double check that you have all your equipment with you, including your leash, drinking water, extra clothes, etc.

- Check out the weather report. Check the wind direction, temperature and overall forecast before getting on the water.

- Bring along an energy bar to eat before the paddle.

ON THE WATER

- Dress for the water temperature even if you don’t plan on getting wet. A simple beanie or jumper is all you may need to begin your paddle until you start warming up.

- Wear a PFD. While many think they’re uncool or bulky, they do keep your core warm in cold temperatures and provide pockets to store an energy bar, phone, beanie etc.

- Always wear a leash if you’re going out in cold water and air temps, or in wind. The last thing you want to do is chase after your SUP in cold water if you fall in.

- Going out before or after work? With shorter days in winter, the sun rises later and it gets darker quicker. Keep that in mind, attach a waterproof white light on your board and/or body for extra safety.

- Carry a drybag on your deck with extra clothing or to store layers you want to remove.

- Remember to still take water. Even though it's colder you will still need to stay hydrated.

- Find a paddling partner particuliarly for rough water or night trips.

- Stay within your skill level. If in doubt, don’t go out.

ON THE PADDLE

- Bring a thermos of hot soup to keep in the car for a warm up.

- Start your car as soon as you get off the water and put the heater on. It’ll be warm by the time you’re ready to drive home.

- Store some energy bars in the car to refuel your body and stay warm.

- Just in case you get wet, bring some extra warm dry clothes, a jacket, and a towel in the car.
